Can Birds Nesting Under Solar Panels Void Your Warranty?
If you have solar panels on your roof, there’s a good chance birds have already discovered the space underneath them. The gap between the panel and the roof is warm, sheltered from wind and rain, and largely undisturbed – in other words, perfect nesting habitat for pigeons, sparrows, starlings, and other urban bird species.
What many Australian homeowners don’t know is that this apparently harmless bird activity can have serious consequences for their solar panels, their roof, and potentially their warranty.
Do Birds Actually Damage Solar Panels?
Yes – in several direct and indirect ways.
Droppings on the panel surface. Bird droppings on the face of solar panels cause localised shading that reduces output disproportionately to their size. Unlike dust, which causes even output reduction across the panel, droppings can cause “hotspot” effects where cells affected by shading are forced to dissipate energy as heat. This can permanently damage individual cells over time.
Nesting material blocking ventilation. Solar panels are designed to operate within a specific temperature range. The gap between the panel and the roof provides ventilation that keeps panels cool. Nesting material packed into this space reduces airflow and causes panels to run hotter than designed – hot panels are less efficient and age faster.
Physical damage to wiring. Birds nesting under panels frequently peck at or chew the wiring and cable connections that run underneath. Damaged wiring is both a performance issue and a fire risk. The Clean Energy Council has documented cases where bird damage to wiring under panels has caused systems to fail or, in serious cases, contributed to roof fire incidents.
Structural damage to the roof. Nesting material retains moisture against the roof surface. Over extended periods, this accelerates roof tile and membrane degradation, particularly in tiled roofs where nesting birds push material under tiles.
Can Bird Damage Void Your Solar Panel Warranty?
This is the question that most surprises Australian solar panel owners – and the answer is yes, it can.
Most tier-1 solar panel manufacturers’ product warranties and performance guarantees include exclusions for damage caused by external factors including bird activity and pest damage. The exact wording varies between manufacturers, but the common principle is that the warranty applies to manufacturing defects, not damage caused by external sources.
The Clean Energy Council’s consumer guide on solar warranties notes that warranty claims are regularly disputed when damage is found to have originated from external factors rather than product defect. Bird-related damage – to the panel surface, to wiring, or to mounting systems – is among the most commonly cited external causes.
Additionally, if panel damage or wiring faults caused by bird activity result in a fire or system failure, household insurance may not cover the damage if it can be established that the issue was caused by neglect – specifically, failure to address a known bird infestation.
Solar Bird Proofing: What it is and How it Works
Solar bird proofing is the installation of a barrier system around the perimeter of your solar panel array that prevents birds from accessing the space underneath.
Professional solar bird proofing typically involves:
Stainless steel mesh. A purpose-designed mesh is fixed around the perimeter of the panel array, connecting the bottom edge of the panels to the roof surface. The mesh is UV-resistant, allows full airflow, and is virtually invisible from ground level.
Clip systems. The mesh is attached using clips designed specifically for solar panel frames – no drilling into the panels, no damage to the frame, and no interference with the panel’s electrical system.
Perimeter inspection. Prior to installation, any existing nesting material and debris is removed from under the panels, and the wiring and connections are visually inspected for any existing bird damage.
A properly installed solar bird proofing system should last 10–15 years without replacement and requires no maintenance once fitted.
How Do You Know If Birds Are Nesting Under Your Panels?
Signs that birds have established nesting under your solar panels include:
- Visible nesting material at the edges of panels when viewed from the ground
- Bird droppings on the panels themselves or on the roof below
- Increased bird activity on or around the roof – particularly pigeons sitting on top of panels
- Unusual sounds from the roof cavity (particularly if birds have found their way from the panel gap into the roof space)
- A recent, unexplained drop in your solar system’s generation output
If your system is generating noticeably less than it should for the current season, bird-related soiling or nesting damage is one of several factors worth investigating.
Commercial Solar Bird Proofing
Bird nesting under solar panels is not only a residential problem. Commercial properties with large solar installations on warehouse or factory roofs face proportionally larger losses from bird activity – both in generation output and in the risk of wiring damage.
Mr Gutter Cleaning provides commercial solar bird proofing for industrial properties across Victoria, using high-access equipment appropriate for large commercial roofs.
